Welcome to Building New Realities – the sixth episode of Future Visual’s bi-monthly podcast. This week my guest is Joanna Popper,  HP’s Global Head of Virtual Reality for Location Based Entertainment.

Joanna is a Hollywood and Silicon Valley Media executive and one of the most influential women in VR. Joanna has worked as an executive producer working on various shows including NBC’s The Awesome Show. Joanna worked as EVP at Singularity University, the NASA-based, Google-sponsored company founded by Ray Kurzweil and Peter Diamandis, preparing leaders for the future. Joanna also worked as Vice President of Marketing for NBC for eight years.

I talked with Joanna about  how HP is leading the way in the immersive space and building new realities with constant hardware innovation. By taking advantage of embodiment, will this bring us the future of computing? Tune in to find out…..

Notes on Episode 6: In conversation with Joanna Popper by Tim Fleming

HP was founded out of a garage 81 years ago by David Packard and Bill Hewlett originally building Oscillators for Walt Disney to be used on Fantasia. This garage started the Silicon Valley phenomena.

The reverb Gen2 was built in association with Valve and Microsoft. Joanna is excited to be working in the immersive space developing technology to bring people and families together and provide a new context for communication.

At Singularity Joanna was inspired to work with Ray Kurzweil who apparently had a 85% accuracy with his predictions (better go and check what is coming up on the Kurzweil chart!).

When asked about the greatest opportunities in her field Joanna stated that we are working in “the future of computing”.  Joanna is inspired by the opportunities and impacts of VR in training – from the trainee surgeon who is trained with better attention, making better outcomes for patients and therefore having a direct impact on the patients life.

Virtual reality (VR) has the power to revolutionise the world of corporate training.

“The future is already here – it’s just not evenly distributed.” Joanna is passionate about the role diversity needs to play in the future of computing.
