The Problem

Felix and Paul are one of the world’s leading practitioners of high-end immersive cinematography. Their cinematic practice has taken them to film in the White House with Cirque de Soleil and even onboard the international space station.

So when Felix and Paul needed a partner to handle the integration of some tricky animations into their live action film “Miyubi”, Future Visual were introduced to them by Meta as the solution to their problem.

Our Solution

The storyline for the film required a very specific look, as we were entering Miyubi’s inner sanctuary which revolved around a small boy’s robot and the world of imagination.

Miyubi is the Japanese toy robot that is in fact inhabited by YOU the viewer. In order to facilitate this we had to do a number of passes on the robot’s texturing and optimisation with particular attention paid to AO, UV wrapping and pixel perfect cleanup.

The beauty of VR and immersive cinema is that creativity is unshackled which whilst ideal for creatives can lead to a number of very demanding technical requests.

On this occasion not only would we be entering a world with flamingos, waterfalls and wait for it…..Unicorns but they would be created from voxels.

Voxels are the blocks that make up a lot of video game environments – think minecraft or roblox and you think of a lot of blocky characters, they are traditionally used because they are “easy” to render reducing the load on the cpu and gpu. In the case of Miyubi it was purely an artistic choice. Our reference animations provided by Felix and Paul were Maya files so we developed a workflow to convert from Maya>Unity whilst converting from smoothed meshes to blocky voxels.

Another challenge was the spatial audio that needed to be hooked to various parts of the animals which were moving both on land and in the sky whilst balancing the audio from a nearby waterfall!

Outcome

Well as you’d expect with an award winning cast that included Jeff Goldblum using a host of immersive technology and two dedicated teams working across the pond, Miyubi has been a VR cinematic hit rated at 8.9/10 on IMDB and was a fan favourite at Sundance.

Technically this was a fantastic opportunity to work with a team dedicated to their craft with a very high standard of production values that pushed the Future Visual team to come up with novel approaches to workflow development and cinematic delivery.
